For the 20th year in a row, the Big Spring High School Speech and Debate Team brought home the gold at the UIL district Cross-Examination Debate competition.  Sweeping the top four positions, the team defeated a contingent of Levelland teams.

Sophomores Trinity Laplante and Braxton Gonzales did not lose a round to win the outright district championship and qualify for the UIL CX Debate State Meet. They edged out the team of Senior Ella Correa and Sophomore Emily Orn, who will join them in Austin.

“I qualified for state last year as a freshman,” Laplante stated, “and my goal this year is to better my results.”

“I’ve been participating in CX debate since my freshman year,” Correa, who attended the UIL State Meet in Extemporaneous Speaking as a sophomore, said. “I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do at CX state.”

In addition to the two state-advancing teams, BSHS took third place with Junior Jyllian Calixto and and Sophomore Keila Reyes as well as fourth place with the Sophomore team of Anna Payne and Kaylee McNally. The placings give the Steer UIL Academic team a 44 point lead over Levelland high school.

“We are excited because we have two really good teams headed to UIL State in March.”  Coach Jennifer Adams stated. The students have worked very hard this year and make it look easier than it is. Defending our District title is always our first goal.”

The University Interscholastic League Cross-Examination State meet is the oldest UIL activity and is held on the campus of the University of Texas in March. For the BSHS Speech and Debate team, this marks the 24th consecutive time to qualify a team for the CX State meet which is a record for any activity at the school.

The BSHS Speech and Debate teams are coached by Jennifer and Clint Adams.
