Goliad Elementary History

Goliad Elementary was first Goliad Junior High then Goliad Middle School.  It was completed in 1958 and housed seventh, eighth, and ninth graders.  When the final addition to Big Spring High School was completed in 1967, the ninth grade was moved to that campus, and Goliad housed only the seventh and eighth grades.  In 1977, when the district downsized, it became a middle school for sixth and seventh graders.

During its time as a secondary school, Goliad boasted a full complement of academic and vocational programs, plus UIL athletics, band, and choir and a variety of co-curricular activities.  Its mascot was the Maverick (part of the Big Spring High school Steer family), and for many years there was an intense rivalry between the Goliad Mavericks and the Runnels Yearlings.
