Mrs. Patsy Sanchez, Principal

Welcome to Big Spring Intermediate, a Capturing Kid's Hearts National Showcase School. I have been the administrator of this campus since 2013. Prior to this position, I taught 6th grade for 17 years. As a 6th grade teacher, I taught Social Studies, Reading, and Science, but most of my teaching career was in Social Studies. I received my Associates in Arts & Sciences from Howard College. I received my Bachelor in History from UTPB and my Masters from Sul Ross University. It had always been my dream to achieve a college degree. I stayed home with my children until they were both in school before I began my educational journey. I am the first generation in my family to receive a college education. In my opinion, there is nothing more rewarding than being an educator. I loved being a teacher and some of my absolute favorite moments are when former students come by for a visit. Now as an administrator, I feel I can still teach and inspire students to do their very best academically and socially, but on a much larger scale. On a personal note, both my children, Amanda and Jared, are Big Spring graduates. My godson, Nic, also graduated from Big Spring. All three went and achieved a college education as well. We are very grateful for the educational opportunities BSISD provided for our children. I have had the extreme privilege of being my granddaughter’s principal, who will be a sixth grader this year. I have been with BSISD since 1998 and I truly appreciate being a part of STEER NATION. What can I say: I truly love what I do.

Mrs. Casandra De La Cruz, Assistant Principal

I have lived in Big Spring my whole life. I attended Washington Elementary, Goliad Middle School (the current BSI), Runnels Junior High, and Big Spring High School. My four children, Johnny, Ariah, Joshua, and Alysandra, all went through Big Spring schools as well. My granddaughter, Nadya, will hopefully get to attend soon also. In 2003, I started my college journey at Howard College where I earned my Associate's Degree in Child and Family Development. I went on to achieve my Bachelor's in English Literature at Grand Canyon University, a Master's in English Literature from National University, and a Master's in Special Education from UTPB. My career at BSISD started with my role as a substitute teacher and then a library aid. Once I received my Bachelor's, I was a 7th grade writing teacher for 6 years, an educational diagnostician for 3 years, and now an assistant principal. I thoroughly enjoy working in education, and I love being able to make a positive impact in the community that my kids and I grew up in.

Mr. Jay Kennedy, Associate Principal

There is nothing like being a part of BSISD. This year marks my 42nd year in education. This year is also my 33rd year living and working in the Big Spring area. I came to Big Spring in 1989 and began working as a teacher and coach at Big Spring High School. I was the Defensive Coordinator in football and the Head Girls Track Coach. We were very successful in both sports and I had the pleasure of coaching some fine athletes and teams. In 2005, I moved to a neighboring school to coach and teach after a coaching change at BSHS. During that time, I became the head football coach there. I also received my Masters in Education from Lamar University and became the High School Principal in that district. In 2010, I was asked to come back as the Associate Principal to BSHS. I worked alongside a fantastic administration, faculty and student body. In 2014, I retired, but I was asked to stay in the district and help re-open Big Spring Intermediate. Since then, I have worked part time as the Associate Principal at BSI. It has truly been an honor to work with Mrs. Sanchez and some of the hardest working educators in our district. My wife, Connie, and I have both spent the majority of our educational careers at BSISD. We have enjoyed every minute of this time because of the highly professional people we have worked with, the caring parents that sent us their kids and the outstanding students we were able to teach. The greatest compliment I can give BSISD is that all three of our own kids, Taylor, Taryn and Tate, all went through BSISD. They graduated from BSHS and went to three different Universities and graduated with honors. They had wonderful teachers, coaches, administrators, and support personnel in this district that helped make them successful. Big Spring has been an outstanding place to live, work and raise our family…..GO STEERS!!!
