Student Advocacy Initiative - Suicide & Crisis Prevention
Student Advocacy Initiative
It’s not always easy to see that a student is struggling, and with school mental health resources often stretched to the limits, it’s possible that students who are in need of help may not always be visible.
The Student Advocacy Initiative will provide immediate services to students who are struggling with suicidal or homicidal ideation. This is accomplished through GoGuardian Beacon, which is a computer program that notifies our Student Advocacy Initiative team of instances where the student may be at risk of suicide, self-harm, or harm to others. Beacon is used to identify students’ online behaviors through search engines, social media, email, web apps, and many more.
Big Spring ISD's action team is comprised of diverse individuals who have been carefully selected based on their skillset. The action team will provide the guidance and intervention needed to keep our students from acting on their impulses in a space that is welcoming, safe, respectful, and inclusive for all students. The action team forms an alliance with the student and their family and offers guidance on finding the resources available within our community to help them understand and support the student’s mental health.
Big Spring ISD's goal is to promote hope, self-reliance, and the connection that our students need in order to grow into emotionally competent young adults who are equipped to handle challenging situations without resorting to dangerous behaviors.
