Severe Weather Procedures

Big Spring ISD is committed to keeping our students and staff safe during severe weather events. The weather is regularly monitored through the District's two Perry Weather stations as well as through weather alert radios and websites such as NOAA and Accuweather. In the event of severe weather, the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, Director of Safety and Security and Campus Principals will all be regularly updated with information to maintain the safety of their students and staff on each campus.

Severe Weather Notice

If a severe weather incident occurs, Big Spring ISD will notify parents and the community of any updates to school schedules or student safety through several different sources.

  • Blackboard Mass Notification System
  • Big Spring ISD website
  • Big Spring Campus websites
  • Big Spring ISD and Campus Facebook pages
  • Local Radio Stations

It is very important that parents and guardians have updated their contact information (cell phone number and email address) with their student's campus in order to receive the mass notifications.

Winter Weather Procedures

Closing or Delaying School

In the event that the weather creates conditions that necessitate a delayed opening or closing of school, the decision will be made and communicated as soon as possible to parents/guardians and staff.

What are the factors in determining the closing of school or a delayed start due to inclement weather?

Student and staff safety are the focus when deciding school status during winter weather events. Current and future weather patterns are considered when making decisions as well as road conditions. The District will also try to make a decision that keeps parents/guardians in mind and will attempt to keep any inconveniences to a minimum while maintaining the highest level of safety for students and staff.

Who makes the decision to close school or delay the start of school?

The Superintendent will make the final decision. However, there are many factors and people who are involved in the decision and will provide information to aid the Superintendent. The Assistant Superintendent, Director of Safety and Security, the Director of Auxiliary Services, and other District employees will evaluate the road and weather conditions as well as consult with external organizations such as law enforcement to get the most up-to-date information possible to make a decision that will keep the students and staff of Big Spring ISD safe and secure during severe weather conditions.

What is the procedure if a decision is made to close during the school day?

In the event inclement weather occurs during a school day, Big Spring ISD will communicate any changes to the school schedule with parents/guardians in the following ways:

    • Blackboard Mass Notification System
    • Big Spring ISD website
    • Big Spring Campus websites
    • Big Spring ISD and Campus Facebook pages
    • Local Radio Stations

This information will be relayed to parents/guardians as soon as a decision affecting the school schedule is made.
